more on Gregg Stocki and his drumming career

Gregg Stocki Gregg and Dan met back in Zurich, Switzerland in 1993 or 94. Dan was playing in the old "Hirsch" in downtown Zurich and Gregg came in after his show with Becky Hobbs. Since then, Gregg went on to being Marty Stuart's drummer and then doing the beat for Tracy Lawrence until 2 years ago. . With Gregg, we will be doing lots of Marty Stuart and Tracy Lawrence songs. Gregg also drummed on the truly cool Marty Stuart album "THE PILGRIM"
newspaper article on Stocki concert with Coates (auf Deutsch!)JOHNNY CASH TRIBUTE SHOW: Dan did 3 shows with a Johnny Cash Tribute show in December. Along with video of Cash, some of which the 8 piece band accompanied, there were about 7 guest singers including Dieter Thomas Kuhn, who happens to have met Cash and is a big fan. Dan sang two songs in Kaiserslautern, Ludwigsburg and Aschaffenburg. Band members include Norbert Dengler on Lead Guitar and Banjo and Winnie Winnbolt on steel.
The Mercedes Sprinter went to its last gig in Nordenberg, Germany on December 17. The old 1999 workhorse took the troubadors to Poland, France, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. It had been to every danged corner of Germany too. Last two years the turbo didn't work ... The replacement is a 2007 Fiat Ducato.
The Mercedes ACTROS is impressive. The Dan T. Coates band was in Kassel to help with the presentation. Here is Andy, ANDREAS JESEK, Verkaufsleiter Nutzfahrzeuge, Dan and Gábor. Interesting fact: this time the big Mercedes workhorse was roadtested on the road instead of just computer simulated tested. This event on November 12, was a real pleasure to play music for. Well organised with super pleasant people, great sound system, good food and coffee! The Kassel Dealership is huge! From one end to the other, almost 1 kilometer long! **ACTROS

Dan had salesman JÖRG BORZ show him a nice new-used Sprinter. Maybe its time to replace this Mercedes
with one of these Mercedes...
JENNY WORKS IN THERE! CD OF THE YEAR?!

Daniel's album JENNY WORKS IN THERE has been nominated for album of the year. The DTC Band is nominated in the catagory Duo/Band of the year. The winners will be announced at the Country Music Fanfair (CMM) in Berlin, February 2012.

The big Colorado to Utah to Arizona tour was as succesful as a cactus in the desert. We started in Denver, CO. and ended up in Tombstone, AZ., where we played at the Apache Spirit Ranch, The Longhorn Restaurant and then the crowning gem of all gigs: THE DRAGOON SALOON. This saloon sits on top of the GOOD ENOUGH MINE, which we also toured.
Kraig from the Dragoon Saloon went 72 hours with virtually no sleep, getting the bathrooms finished for the weekend. He needed them for the licence to reopen. What a great place. Pictures follow!

Dan, Andy, Dietmar and Gábor are heading for Denver, Colorado and then Tombstone, Arizona. From Denver, the guys will head down through Indian country past the Bryce Canyon and down to Tombstone. Still time for a last minute ticket! Come on over!
FOUR CORNERS in Untermeitingen, Germany: On August 27, it was crowded in Europe's Nr. 1 Honky Tonk, FOUR CORNERS. That was the Coates Band's record number of guests! Of course when they opened for Tracy Lawrence it was about twice that full! Lots of new folks and lots of Dan's CDs went home with them! Next date in Four Corners is on October 15! The Coates Band will be still hot from their tour in Arizona! Then on Dec 31, of course the big NEW YEAR'S EVE party!
Dan's new album is finally finished! Its being pressed! Arrives on July 4th! 19 songs including one bluegrass
instrumental and is entitled JENNY WORKS IN THERE. Dan's band here in
Germany, Andy, Gábor and Dietmar are in top recording form and guest musicians, Gregg Stocki,
Aaron Till, Markus Stadler, Paul Kramer bring the Nashville touch to the
album. More here: DISCOGRAPHY Sound bytes coming!

The Tour is Austria with Wolfgang Fuchs was envigorating! Really a classy act. Excellent photography and an intelligent audience at every show. New England is well worth a trip, either to Wolfgang's show or to one of the Northeastern American states in person!
New Engand unknown? Unfortuantely the audiences were smaller for New England than for most of Wolfgang's past Multivision Shows. New England simply is not as recognisable as Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, etc. But each and every vistor to the show was totally enamoured with the pictures and narration about New England (Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts). And it is safe to say that the live music by Coates and Bardfalvi was also a hit. 600 cds were sold in 6 weeks (27 shows).
The ORPHEUM in Graz is a famous location for live music. Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and now Daniel and Gábor! The crowd was fantastic. Ca 400 fans of Wolfgang Fuch's pictures and narration proved to be music fans as well. Tuesday, March 15 and Wednesday 16th were also our record nights for CD sales with over 100 albums now in the hands of the Grazer Folk!

Judenburg is a fine old city high on a mountain. This location was one of the most beautiful up till now and it was actually possible to do one song completely acoustic without amplification. Also shows what an attentive audience we have!

Less inspiring was our Autobahn Mercedes Sprinter breakdown coming back to Graz from our gig in Four Corners by Augsburg on March 13. Just before one of the big tunnells by Bruck am Mur, the generator light came on and we took to the mountain roads. Minutes later the truck came to a complete stop. Thank the stars we were not in that tunnell. ADAC contacted the Austrian Autoclub and they hauled us to Mercedes in Niklasdorf. We caught a train back to Graz. The train trip was interesting with standing room only. Conversation with a Romanian lady of the evening returning to her job in Graz and then a political discussion with a Persian taxicab driver who shuttled us home. Memories of the Shah. Educated fellow with a good handle on present developments down in the Middle East.
March 18 is the third and last night in Graz's Orpheum. The expected crowd is at over 500 people. Professional lighting and sound there kicks butt! Thanks to the backstage, mix and light dudes!
April 15 was the last show in the classic town of Steyer. With a view of the intersection of two rushing rivers from the hotel's breakfast room, Steyer was one of the prettiest towns visited. The crowd there was also one of the most energetic.![]()
ROSEWOOD RECORDS is producing a CD with "Songs in Campfire Style". COUNTRY MUSIC MESSE in Berlin was okay. One hell of a lot of Karaoke singers at this thing! What a fiasco. Hey, if you need playback just don't come! Sucks. A friend of mine who has never been to a country event in her life and spent a few hours in shock as she looked around the messe didn't understand. "Why don't the people just ask around for a few musicians. There are enough of them here just sitting around." Good question! Billy Yates is an interesting guy. He was the headliner. He writes several songs each day. The performing thing is almost like a sideline.
We shared a stand with Amarillo-Mountarillo and Britta T. On the left with the baseball cap is Herr Sebbo counting the millions his new Mountarillo CD brought in. The CD is available on Coates Cat Records. Check it out on the new Coates Cat Records homepage.![]()

Charlie Louvin is dead. But not his music of course. His real name was "Loudermilk" (too hard to pronounce). He was 83 years old. Rediscovered in recent years by all sorts of music fans, much the way Cash was at the end. The Louvin Brothers are the reason the Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds and almost everybody else sounds like they do when they harmonize. Aaron Tippin Show went off well with Dan's Band featuring Andy Kupfer, Didi Waechtler and Gábor Bárdfalvi. Aaron was maybe the only (major) artist to have come early for the opening acts and Dan and Aaron talked for about an hour after the show. Lots of interesting insight into the Nashville Industry machine. Much of it ugly... Very nice and genuine guy and of course a fantastic performer with a unique voice. Aaron's Steeler, who had worked for many years with Tammy Wynette, watched the whole show from behind Dietmar's shoulder and was full of praise for Didi's steel work and the band's performance.

The Tour with Gregg Stocki in March, 2010 went smooth as vanilla ice cream! Gregg learned all the songs and the songs he didn't learn he knew anyway! It was especially cool to play the Marty Stuart songs and rap a little bit about Marty's approach to playing. Also found out Marty is a Waffle House fan. You can catch Gregg Stocki in Nashville playing at Layla's with JYPSI. JYPSI will also be at a festival in Denmark on August 7, 2010. Gregg is also drumming for Lori Morgan.

PULLMAN CITY 1 in Eging Am See (Germany) season kick off! Dan and Gábor had a great 2 nights in Pullman City at the opening weekend on March 28/29. Lots of new faces as well as loyal fans from the past. A group of young music fanatics with their own band "hot sausages" were at the front table keeping an eye out for new guitar and bass licks. A great group of guys from Holland who now own all Dan's CDs are planning a fiestival in the land of Gouda cheese and dykes. Pullman has some new things to offer...special area for kids and a Mexican wandering minstrel. Lots more Pullman gigs coming up...the next one is on May 02.!

So nun genug gelästert.

PHIL VASSAR in FOUR CORNERS, Untermeitingen, Germany

February 1st, 2010 is a date that will live in infamy....in a positive way!! Dan opened for Phil Vassar at Four Corners in Untermeitingen, Germany. Phil's song "where have all the pianos gone", really says it all. How many great songs has this guy written? And to bring so much energy on stage with piano, acoustic guitar and mandolin/fiddle! Of course add Phil's expressive voice and the vocal harmonies of his two buds. Dan got to have a good long visit with Phil and his team at breakfast. Nothin in the world like songwriters who sing their own. Britta T. from Switzerland did an excellent job as the other opener in Four Corners. Good choice by club manager Bill Wallace!! Check out the Great American Country Site and leave a comment about the show in Four Corners! Read the Great American Country Article here and leave a comment!

Philadelphia to Nashville: On Jan 1., I had the honor to play for my nephew's wedding in Philly. His wife Tierney planned and carried out the perfect wedding. She is truly a class act. I sang a Kate Wolf song called "Give Yourself To Love" with my sister Barbara (the groom's mom). After a few days in Pennsylvania, I drove down to Nashville and had me a high old time. Recorded four songs at Markus Stadler's studio and went to a songwriter's night in the Bluebird. Also met with Gregg Stocki to work out his little tour with us. I drove back to PA and visited Lexington, Virginia. Almost hit a huge fricking deer who had already been hit once and then got back up.
In the photo from right to left: Dan, Dan's Dad, Nephew Kelly, Nephew Matt, Tierney, Dan's sister Barbara, Brother-in-law Jack and the wedding maker...

CONGRATULTIONS TO THE FDP! The FDP definately has some great taste in music! Thanks to Gabi Renatus and the John Cash fan Sven for taking us on board after the initial show last year in Bamberg. Our job was to play an hour or so before the speeches and attract folks to the event. As it got closer to election day, the crowds came earlier and got larger.
Dan, Andy and Gábor really enjoyed the run of events we played for the Free Democrats. In addition to the shows on the Freedom Truck, we played some other really cool locations in "Halle 02" in Heidelberg, the "Alteskesselhaus" in Duesseldorf and in Cottbus at the "Alte Chemiefabrik". These are clubs that our country music path never leads us down. By the end of the tour, every single member of the Team was rocking to our music including the "Julis" (the FDP young volunteers) under direction of Sandro Schilder who never lost his cool and the truck team lead by Werner Lorenz. These people did a fantastic job. Running a campagne like this is a heck of a big job. Soundman Lutz Helbig kept the sound and video running smoothly. MC Andreas Heinzgen really put us in a good light and showed his knowlege of every song we pulled out by naming the writer or singer and easing into his monologue, then handing the show back to us. Very professional work.
Since we are not really a politically-minded band and two of us can't vote in Germany anyhow, we started out being somewhat less than interested in what was going on. But by the end of the tour, I was really cheering for the FDP. We met all the bosses there. General Secretary Dirk Niebel, Miriam Gruss and of course Dr. Westerwelle who is moving into the position of nr. 2 after the chancellor as foreign minister of Germany. When they took this picture in Munich, its hard to tell if Guido Westerwelle even knew we were his backup band! He had just whipped up a crowd of about 1400 people on the Marienplatz.

With Doctor Guido Westerwelle on September 23, 2009, with the grand "Rathaus" in the background. Location was the Marienplatz in Munich, Germany.

Dobrowa Gornica, Poland! Thanks for the award! The "Country Piknik" was a blast! There were about 4000 people at the Zielona Park and 4 bands. WILLIE NELSON has a new album out. What does "Stern" Magazine say about it!?
Willie did a great service way back in the day when he brought out his "Stardust" album. Everybody had almost forgotten, Blue Skies, Stardust, Georgia On My Mind and all those other classics.
So now he's doing it again.
And he's paying his income taxes and still playing...golf and guitar.

WIL RIPLEY died at the end of August in Hofheim, Hessen. He played in the bands Houston and Outlaw Country with Dan Coates here in Germany. He was a Sergeant in the Army until the late 90s. He retired and lived around Frankfurt playing some music. He had a band called Bootleg for awhile. After he got out of the army he let that hair grow. Wil could really drink beer. He had some demons to deal with but he was always planning his next music thing and could be a real positive force.

Great show in Untermeitingen, Germany. Tracy and his boys were great. Real professional „givers“ but also good and neighborly!
